“Poland and Ukraine”. With these words said two years ago, Michel Platini, the head of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Executive Committee announced the host of football finals of European Championship in 2012. What is the state of stadiums’ preparation? You will find the answer in following report.
With every month bringing us closer to the Euro 2012 Championships, which will take place on the Polish and Ukrainian football fields the number of skeptics and malcontents (as media often refer to as euro-sceptics) is decreasing. The assurance of Polish cities, in which the championships are to be held, of the Polish Soccer Association and UEFA ,for a long period of time were not enough to suppress the country ‘s opinion that there’s no way Poland can prepare the Championships.
The Euro-skeptics pointed out that our country hasn’t got the required conditions to perform such a prestigious event, adding that Poland will not be able to build at least four arenas for the Championships. Such voices were going hand in hand along with some ‘organization problems’ , ‘calling off the Championships’ and the ‘forthcoming crisis’ which every now and then appeared in the foreign and sometimes also Polish media.
Now it can be seen that the situation has changed.- some of the stadiums are ‘growing’ on our eyes. The last biddings are settled and contracts are being signed. This resulted quickly in reducing the voices of malcontents.
Moreover, the ‘crisis’ helped somewhat in the organization of the event. The companies competing in the bidding have decreased the cost of building new arenas, thus hundreds of millions of zlotys was saved. (read more…)
There are no large problems in Poland – said Michel Platini, who came with 2 days long business trip to Poland.
- Poland and Ukraine have to continue their efforts. Six to eight cities, that will organise championship, are going to be chosen on 13 May- he said. One of factors deciding which city is chosen are contracts with hotels for so called UEFA family, that means campaigners, referees, sponsors, etc. rooms. Along with UEFA delegation in Poland, there appeared a lot of speculation about particular cities chances in race to Euro 2012.
- It is actually a problem- Platini explained. There aren’t enough of hotels in Ukraine, in Poland there are enough of them but there are problems to book as many rooms as we need. I know, that representatives of Polish Football Association and the Ministry of Sport are planning visits in applying cities to discuss the problem with hotels’ owners.

The Ukrainians made recently huge progress in stadium preparations for coming Euro 2012 Championships. Below the most recent photo relation from building Odessa stadium.
Mr Piotr Chełkowski, the chairman of the partnership management, carrying out the construction works, presented graphically the initial stage of the National Stadium construction in Warsaw for the European Football Championships in 2012: 330 000 cubic meters of ground and 6500 square meters of crushed concrete was removed. 32 000 square meters of diaphragm walls was made, 16 00 piles with the total length up to 170 km was stuck.
- The winter period was certainly not favorable for any kind of constructional work., and probably this was the most difficult thing to get over ,for example, the removal of ground had to be well-organized otherwise, as a company, we would risk a negative feedback from the citizens of Warsaw. Particularly, taking into account the transport of heavy equipment running all day and night. – said Piotr Chełkowski at the end of the first stage of the construction of the National Stadium.
