Jewhen Czerwonenko - the boss of the Ukrainian National Agency for Euro 2012 said on Wednesday, that if works connected with preparation for Euro 2012 in Lvov will not speed up, the role of the host Odessa or Charkow - reserve cities can get.

Visiting Odessa Czerwonenko said this city have great chances to be the host for future finalists of the European championships.

It is already next, after the UEFA representative Matteo Gambuto, statement giving the distinct signal that Lvov can lose the status of the city - host. Let us remind, that a few days ago telling about problems of “different cities” Gambutto meant exactly Lvov. (more…)

The euphoria which gripped Ukraine and Poland on April 18, 2007 after winning the right to host Europe’s football championship, EURO 2012, has come to nothing.

A year after the triumphal hugs and kisses, the two countries’ preparations have progressed so poorly that Football Federation of Ukraine President Hryhoriy Surkis, and Football Federation of Poland President Michal Listkiewicz had to explain the situation in detail to the Union of European Football Association’s executive committee in last March.

The National Agency to Prepare and Host EURO 2012 was established to coordinate all state structures in Ukraine. Its chair, Yevhen Chervonenko, constantly criticizes the Cabinet of Ministers for ignoring his organization’s problems.

“I consider the level of financial support for the Agency by the government to be embarrassing,” he said of the EURO 2012 preparation funding. “The government scoffs not at me (I don’t care — I’m a self-sufficient person), it scoffs at Ukraine,” adding,”I have been spending my own personal money to maintain the agency. The cars, computers in the office – everything was bought with my own money. I have spent and spend without regret.” (more…)

Polish-Ukrainian government contract about the cooperation by common organization of the Football European Championships - Euro 2012 will be signed on 18 April. A minister of sport and tourisms Mirosław Drzewiecki expressed such belief in the published on Saturday conversation with the Kiev weekly “Dzerkało Tyżnia”.

- I would like that the agreement should be signed 18 April, that is year after granting Poland and Ukraine the right to carrying out of finals of the European championships in the football - said. The minister thinks that the intergovernmental agreement about the cooperation in the matter of the organization Euro 2012 should lead to the closer coordination of action of Poland and Ukraine. The president of UEFA, Michel Platini appealed to organizers of the football European championships in 2012, Poles and Ukrainians, in order to “wake them up” in the realization of the program of preparations for this event.

Euro 2012 found the good place, but some people say that more brisk movements are needed from the side of both countries - on the webpage pointing to the opinion of Platini was written. The UEFA in 30th of the January presented the critical report on preparations of organizers of championships, underlining, that “the closest months will have deciding meaning in order to avoid harmful delays in the realization of projects concerning the infrastructure”.

Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and her Polish counterpart Donald Tusk on Friday promised their countries would co-host the European football championship in 2012 successfully.

Tymoshenko and Tusk made the remarks after the two sides signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in organizing and holding of the 2012 football championship. (more…)

The Ukrainian Minister of Sport, Jurij Pawłenko, claims that in 2008 his country will catch up on the preparation to the EURO 2012. We lost a lot of time; honestly, it was 9 months - said Pawłenko on Saturday during the press conference in Kiev.

The minister thinks that the reconstruction of the Olymic Stadium is the most important task for them. Many times UEFA asserted that the Stadium in Kiev, as the international scene of EURO 2012, does not fulfill the security standard.

The main problem is the shopping centre built near the stadium which strongly impedes the emergency action. We have already known what should be done - said Pawłenko. He explained that the surface part of the shopping centre will be liquidated and the owners get a proper compensation. The compensation will be paid by the authorities of Kiev. Both, Poland and Ukraine got the right to the EURO 2012 coordination.

“Trojickyj” shopping centre that is build in the neighbourhood of the Olympic Stadium in Kiev, will have been liquidated by 1 June - an agreement there upon was signed by both, representatives of the Ukrainian government and the owners of the “Trojickyj” shopping centre.

According to the document, till 10 February, the Kiev authorities and the owners of the shopping centre will appoint a working group which decide about the compensation credit for the liquidated building.

UEFA repeatedly called down the Ukrainian authorities that the stadium in Kiev, as the arena for EURO 2012, does not fulfill the security standard. In case of a vacation during EURO 2012 football matches, the shopping centre would hinder such an emergency action.

Austrian corporation Alpine Bau Gmbh won the competition for a build of a new stadium in Lviv.

On Thursday, the mayor of Lviv informed that the football matches of the Euro 2012 championship, that is organized by Poland and Ukraine, will take place in the mentioned stadium. According to Lviv city hall, the stadium that is rated for 33 thousands seats, will cost 85 millions Euro. The design of the building took its pattern from the stadium in Bern, where the participants of EURO 2008 will stay.

Alpine Bau will also build a parking (17 millions Euro) and a 3-starred hotel near the stadium. There was another Austrian company that participated in the auction. It was Implenia Global Solution Ltd which offered the build of a stadium that would contain from 32 to 55 thousands seats and cost 150 millions Euro.

EURO 2012 football matches will take place in at least four Ukrainian cities - Kiev, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk and Lviv.

The Prime Ministe,r Donald Tusk, ensured the presidents of cities - organizers of the EURO 2012 football championship that the build of stadiums in Gdansk, Wroclaw and Poznan will be co-financed by the central budget. During a meeting in Warsaw the Prime Minister and the representatives of praticular cities presented a schedule of the championship spadework and

the miniatures of building where the football matches will be played. Additionally, Donald Tusk informed about the calling of the Organizational Committee where he was going to be leader.

The intention of the Wednesday meeting it was not to quiten anybody. EURO championship is a great challenge so we need to work in the high agog. The rebuke of UEFA is not a problem, it is a support. - Tusk comments on the latest Europe Federation rating which put an attention to the ‘delay’ in Polish and Ukrainian preparation to the EURO 2012. The committee included, among others, vice-premiers Waldemar Pawlak and Grzegorz Schetyna, the Minister of Infrastructure - Cezary Grabarczyk, the Minister of Sport and Tourism - Mirosław Drzewiecki, four presidents of the following cities: Gdansk, Poznan, Warsaw and Wroclaw, the representaitve of PZPN and the leaders of all the parliamentary clubs. In two-week time the representatives of Polish and Ukrainian football federation will learn the UEFA reports about the conditions of EURO 2012 preparations. On the base of those reports further steps for the coming months will be defined.

During the meeting in Nyon all reports created on the base of UEFA experts’ visit in Poland and Ukraine (October 2007) will be shown. One report will deal with stadiums, the another one: transport infrastructure, which means roads, rails, airports and accomodation - said the leader of PZPN group that takes care of EURO 2012, Adam Olkowicz. Poland and Ukraine have been warned by governing body Uefa to speed up their preparations for Euro 2012.

There have been concerns that political change in both countries has affected projects such as stadiums and roads.

“The next four to six months will be crucial to avoid any critical slippage in infrastructure projects,” said Uefa president Michel Platini.

Uefa general secretary David Taylor added: “There has been progress, but it needs to be accelerated.”

Platini made the statement after a two-day meeting of Uefa’s executive committee in Zagreb which reviewed a report on the progress the two countries have made. (more…)

Safety in stadium in cities-hosts of Euro 2012 its the issue raised during Polish-Ukrainian conference in Dnipropietrovsk. Both countries will be co-hosts of the championships.

Over 60 people take part in the conference which was organized as part of Polish-Ukrainian Self-Government Forum Euro 2012. They are representatives of cities-hosts of Euro 2012, representatives of the Ukrainian policy, the Polish embassy in Kiev and the staff of football federations from the both countries.

‘The European Championships are the third sports event in the world and because of that the requirements of UEFA are huge- said a director for safety in Polish Football Federation Wieslaw Wieczorek. One of the requirements is to come into use all stadiums in June 2012. We already know that it’s impossible and there will be delays. Of course UEFA will be informed about it’. (more…)

Stadium in Donieck will be the first arena of Euro 2012 which will come into use. Its opening is expected to be in July next year- announced the representative of city council Aleksander Gromakow during the conference of Polish-Ukrainian Self-Government Forum Euro 2012.

‘It will be the biggest and the most modern object in the eastern part of Europe. A roof made of glass will be its main feature. Apart from the stunning visual effect it is also a practical solution because it has a good effect on the grass preservation’- said Gromakow.

Stadium is patterned on the modernized Benfica’s object in Lisbon. It will hold 55 thousand spectators and its building cost is estimated on 250 million dollars. (more…)

The industrial heart of eastern Ukraine was glowing in a beautiful sunset as local heroes Shakhtar Donetsk took on their arch-rivals Dinamo Kiev.

Yet the Soviet-era stadium looked small and a bit too old-fashioned for Shakhtar Donetsk, one of the country’s top teams.

There are concerns that Ukraine may not be ready in time for the Uefa European Football Championships in 2012, which it will co-host with Poland. It will be the most prestigious project that Ukraine has ever co-hosted, and it is expected to attract thousands of fans. But there are fears that the politicians here do not have their eye on the ball. Donetsk is one of four host cities in Ukraine. All of the venues were built by the communists, and they are well past their best, needing to be replaced or renovated. Ukraine has faced one political crisis after another and now the country is preparing for a general election. “The most difficult thing will be to change the attitude, to make the authorities look in the direction of football and start paying attention to the country’s infrastructure,” says Dmitriy Chigrinsky, a player for Shakhtar Donetsk and Ukraine. “It’s no secret that our country needs serious modernisation,” Dmitriy adds.

Poles and Ukrainians have serious technical problems, but Italians can relieve them and take over duties of the organizer of Euro 2012 at any time- we read in today’s edition of the “Dziennik”.

These words were said by Giancarlo Abete, chairman of FIGC (Italian Football Federation). After Wednesday’s match of Ukraine with Italy Abete announced:- Problems of Poland and Ukraine are well-known for us. We are constantly outdistancing them because we do not count on politicians but we do our job- we build stadiums, develop infrastructure.
