Football – Allardyce: A long way to go

Sam Allardyce insists he will not be getting carried away by West Ham’s 2-0 victory over Cardiff in the first leg of their Championship play-off semi-final.

The Hammers are 3/4 with bookmaker to be promoted following the win at Cardiff City Stadium, but Allardyce is keen to point out the job of getting to Wembley for the final is only half done.
The London side have drawn eight games at Upton Park this season – and have also lost four – and Allardyce wants them to attack from the off on Monday.
“It was a terrific result but there’s a long way to go,” said the West Ham boss after the game.
“We need to be as professional on Monday as we were in Cardiff and that should be enough to take us through.
“It’s my job to start mentally preparing them for the fact that they’ve got to approach the game as a 0-0 and they’ve to try to win it.”
