Golf – Italians seek place in history

Edoardo and Francesco Molinari believe they are capable of helping Italy to become only the third nation to successfully defend the World Cup title.

The Italian brothers shot to stardom two years ago when they defeated Northern Ireland duo Graeme McDowell and Rory McIlroy to win the trophy, and Italy are now 25/1 with bookmaker to retain their title.
The United States have won the title 23 times since it was first played in 1953 and have successfully defended it on numerous occasions, while Spain are the only other nation to retain the trophy in 1977.
However, Edoardo Molinari believes Italy can win the event again in China this week and write their names in the record books.
“Two years ago, we had a very good week and we enjoyed ourselves very much,” the 30-year-old told Reuters.
“Hopefully, we can do the same this year. But the most important thing is that we are playing quite well and we know each other’s game so very well.”
