Golf – Mickelson eager to impress

Phil Mickelson is desperate to shine at this week’s Presidents Cup, having struggled for the USA during his two previous appearances outside of North America.

Mickelson, who has played in all eight previous stagings of the tournament, lost two matches and halved two in 1998 in Australia, while the former world number one lost all five matches in South Africa five years later.
The USA, who are 1/1 with bookmaker to beat the International Team at Royal Melbourne, were thrashed by nine points at the same venue 13 years ago, but Mickelson hopes for a better outcome this time.
He told the PGA Tour’s official website: “We have done pretty well in this competition and we have been able to do okay at home and away, but the only time we have lost at all is right here in Royal Melbourne.
“It’s a real challenge for us to play here, because we are playing such a strong team. The International Team has a lot of great players, a lot of great Australian players.”
