The European Championship tournament co-hosts in football will be debutants in this great event. The only tournament in which Ukraine participated as an independent state was the World Cup in Germany in 2006. There, after two wins in the group stage the team was promoted to 1/8 of the finals by beating the Swiss on penalties and then to the quarter-finals where the team managed to cope with the later winner, Italy. Due to the fact that the Yellow-Blues are guaranteed to start in the main event, they played friendly […]

Michal Bilek’s team, currently 29th in the FIFA ranking, will play for the fifth time in a row, for the title of the European Champion. The best result so far was the second place achieved in a debut performance in 1996. In the qualifying group the Czechs won only thirteen points which allowed them for finishing second behind Spain, which won all of their meetings. The Czechs played in the playoffs with Montenegro beating them twice 2-0 and 1-0. The goals scored in the qualifying games were scored by Tomas […]

Croatia, the tenth in the FIFA ranking, will participate only for the fourth time at the European Championship and will try to improve their best result which was the quarterfinal achieved twice. Croats took the second place in the qualifying group losing two points to the Greeks, the European Champions of 2004. In the playoffs they did not give any chance to the Turkish team by winning the first game 3-0 and the second ending with a goalless draw. A large impact on the game of the Croats will be […]

A Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) consultation meeting took place in Kiev on 2 May. The informal meeting was well attended, which illustrates a strong interest in common activities against racism in football among Ukrainian FARE partners. It is also a testimony to the networking work in Ukraine conducted by the ‘NEVER AGAIN’ Association in frames of the FARE East European Development Project. Among others, the following groups and organizations were represented: the Football Against Prejudices coalition, African and Indian migrant communities, the Congress of National Minorities in Ukraine, […]

The Ukrainian cities of Kiev and Donetsk are guaranteed to be chosen as hosts for the 2012 European soccer championship and three others discover on Wednesday if they will join them. UEFA’s Executive Committee meets in Bucharest this week to chose the venues for the tournament being co-hosted by Ukraine and Poland. The cities of Lviv, Dnipropetrovsk, Kharkiv and Odessa all hope to be chosen although the latter two are on Ukraine’s reserve list of venues. Uefa will announce the list of host cities for Euro 2012 next week and everyone wants to keep hold of their slice of the financial pie. These are a big few days for Ukrainian football. On Thursday, they will find out who will be their first representatives in a European final for 23 years, as Shakhtar Donetsk host Dynamo Kyiv in the second leg of their Uefa Cup semi-final, a 1-1 first-leg draw having seemingly handed Shakhtar the initiative, even if they were second best for much of the game. […]

After reports during Euro 2008 that Poland and Ukraine may lose Euro 2012 Michel Platini’s visits to both countries were treated as enormously important by organizers. Platini didn’t say much while in Poland, which can be read as a good sign, whereas he criticised Ukraine severely when meeting local officials. As a result, UEFA now demands that Poland prepares an allternate plan to organize the tournament all by itself. Ukraine has no problems with stadiums, which are almost finished in Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk and Donetsk. One stadium is to be built […]
