Soccer – Arteta targets third-place finish

Mikel Arteta thinks Arsenal can hang on to third place in the Premier League and earn an automatic place in next season’s Champions League.

After finishing fourth last term, the Gunners needed to beat Udinese in the final qualifying round last August before going on to the group stages of Europe’s premier competition.
Arsene Wenger’s team have won eight of their last nine league games and are now two points ahead of fourth-place Spurs with a game in hand. That match is at rock-bottom Wolves, a game Arsenal are 2/5 with bookmaker to win, while Arteta is 10/1 to open the scoring.
Former Everton ace Arteta said: “Third place gives you direct access to the Champions League, it’s really important.
“We’ve put in a big effort, we are in a strong position now and we don’t want to waste it. It will be a big fight and I think it will go right until the end.”
